The Blade Tracking System (BTS) Rudder Assembly is best used for replacement of a damaged rudder assembly, bent blade or cracked Teflon-Delrin central block, common on Perception, Aquaterra, Dagger and Wilderness Systems kayaks. It can be used on some Old Town, Ocean Kayak, Cobra, Heritage and Feather Craft kayaks. The BTS will fit many other brands of kayak as well. It is not universal to all kayaks. Carefully look at the photo (see large image for alternative view) and read the full product description. If you have a cracked rudder pin block (the central core of the rudder assembly), then the BTS Rudder Assembly is the best option for repair. This applies to older Wilderness Systems (black block), Perception, Dagger and Heritage (white block) brand kayaks of the 1980s, 1990s and a few years into the 21st century, as well as most brands to date. Also; The Yakima rudder housing (black plastic) common on Perception and Dagger kayaks, circa 2002-2004 is no longer available. The BTS Rudder Assembly is the best option for repair. This rudder assembly can also be used for new custom installations. For older Perception composite kayaks (Kevlar or Fiberglass) such as the Eclipse and Shadow use the Feather Craft Rudder Assembly.
The BTS pin length is 3.5 inches from bottom of block to the tip of the pin. The pin has multiple rudder pin ring holes to accommodate common rudder brackets. The pivot pin is 3/8 in. in diameter, total length is 3.5 inches long and needs .25 inches exposed to accept a Rudder Pin Ring. The depth of the rudder bracket should not exceed 3.25 inches. The blade length is 3 inches wide by 20 inches in overall length. The distance from the leading edge of the block to the leading edge of the pin is 7/16 in. Made of anodized aluminum.
Replacement is Simple. Disconnect the control cables but leave them attached to the foot controls. Untie and remove the lift lines from the deck. Slip off the rudder pin ring and remove old rudder assembly. Install the new rudder assembly in reverse order.
